There’s something undeniably romantic about a picnic—the fresh air, delicious food, and the simple joy of being with someone or the people you love. And when you add a little French inspiration, it becomes even more special. This Valentine’s Day, why not step away from the usual dinner reservations and create a magical moment outdoors with a charming French-style picnic?

Choosing the Perfect Spot

First things first—location. A quiet spot by the beach, a peaceful park under the shade of an old tree, or even your own backyard with fairy lights twinkling above can all set the perfect scene. Bring along a cosy blanket or a classic red checkered tablecloth for that effortlessly chic French touch.

A Picnic Basket Filled with Love

A French picnic is all aboutquality over quantity—a handful of carefully chosen delights rather than an overwhelming spread. Here are a few essentials to include:

  • Baguette & Fromage – Nothing says ‘French’ quite like a fresh baguette paired with a selection of beautiful cheeses. Try a creamy Brie, a nutty Comté, or a bold Roquefort.

  • Charcuterie & Pâté – Add some delicate slices of prosciutto, saucisson, or a rustic duck pâté for a savoury balance.

  • Fresh Fruit – Sweet, ripe strawberries, grapes, and figs not only taste wonderful but also add a touch of colour to your picnic spread.

  • A Sweet Treat – For dessert, why not indulge in a few macarons, buttery madeleines, or a small tarte Tatin to share!

  • Wine or Sparkling Water – A chilled bottle of Rosé or French Champagne makes the moment extra special, but if you prefer something non-alcoholic, sparkling water with a twist of lemon feels just as elegant.

Embracing the Moment

A picnic isn’t just about the food—it’s about slowing down, enjoying the fresh air, and making space for conversation and laughter. Leave the phones in the basket for a while, sip your wine, and take in the beauty of the moment. Whether you’re watching the sunset, listening to the waves, or simply gazing at the stars, a French-inspired picnic is a perfect way to celebrate love in its simplest, most beautiful form.

So this Valentine’s Day, let go of the pressure of extravagant plans and embrace the effortless romance of a picnic. After all, the French know best—love is about presence, not perfection. 💕

Here is our list of favourites, although there were many smaller parks and places along the Seine we also liked to stop and enjoy a snack.  Add them to your list to visit when in Paris next.

  • Tuileries Garden ~ Located in front of the Louvre
    and of course
