From Grignan to Grasse - The Durance Story

Durance's story is rooted in Grignan, in the heart of the Drôme Provençale, surrounded by vineyards, truffle oaks and lavender fields.

In 1997, the family behind Durance took over a small farm where lavender flowers were already being cultivated and lavender essential oil produced. Inspired by the landscape and aromatic plants of Provence, the family developed a world of fragrance and care centred on the simple pleasures of daily life.

Even the name Durance reflects this connection to place, taken from the river that flows through Provence and nourishes its landscape.

Durance works with master perfumers in Grasse, widely recognised as the world capital of perfume, to develop balanced and distinctive fragrances that translate the landscapes, flowers and everyday memories of Provence into scent.

Malmaison has visited several perfumers and historic perfume houses in Grasse, giving us a first-hand appreciation of the extraordinary skill, tradition and fragrance expertise associated with this remarkable French town.  Experiencing Grasse and its perfumery culture in person has deepened our appreciation for the craftsmanship behind the French fragrances we continue to select for Malmaison.

Lavender, verbena, rose, cotton, fresh linen and other Durance compositions are designed to be recognisable yet refined, allowing fragrance to settle naturally into the home rather than dominate it.

Durance also sources natural extracts as close to its Provençal workshops as possible where appropriate, while carefully balancing natural-origin and necessary synthetic ingredients to achieve fragrance quality, stability and performance.
